GODHAN GAUSHALA, RADHANPUR (Gujarat)

The Gaushala was under the consultancy of a retired scientist (Dr. A S Dave), who, in 1999 bifurcated the Gaushala into two parts - an ‘improvement herd’ and the remaining ‘Panjrapole herd’. The management undertook a Kankrej improvement programme by maintaining pedigree and performance records. This Gaushala is one good example of effective use of AI. In 2005 the daily peak yield was recorded as 12 kg and lactation yield as 2500 kg. The Gaushala with more than 500 pure Kankrej cows has produced young calves from elite cows and put them to use for breeding in the surrounding villages.
